"The Bevin House" is a Victorian mansion located at 76 Bevin Road in the village of Asharoken in northern Long Island near New York. This is where, during late 1942, Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote The Little Prince in less then two months.
The house had been rented by Consuelo, Saint-Exupery's wife. For a while it was the couple's "house of happiness". They entertained many friends there and among them were Andre Maurois and the Swiss philosopher Denis de Rougemont with whom Saint-Exupery played endless games of chess.
The house was built in 1862 by Cornelius Henry DeLamater and remained property of the family, which became Bevin by marriage, until 1960. In 1964 it was sold to Charles William Foesell. In 1979 the estate was purchased by real estate developer Nikos Kefalidis who commissioned an extensive restoration of the mansion. Kefalidis was unfortunately killed in the crash of Swissair flight SR 111 on 2 September 1998.
"The Bevin House" is still owned today by the Kefalidis family. Unfortunately it cannot be visited.
